Fundamental physical ideas and ways of thinking that will enable students to understand and make informed judgments regarding technical issues upon which the well-being of our society increasingly depends. Key physical ideas will be discussed in their historical context to highlight the challenges confronted and the innovations involved. The course will treat global warming and climate change, alternative energy sources, resource depletion, and management, and efforts to control CO2 emissions.
