The Irish Studies program at Queens College welcomes students of all backgrounds as it offers a rich and interdisciplinary set of courses that explores Ireland’s history, society, culture, literature, archaeology, folklore, mythology, and language. Ireland has made its presence felt throughout the world, not simply through its culture but in the rich diasporic tradition of immigrants. The Irish Studies program therefore encourages students to study the ways in which distinct Irish experiences—including religion, colonialism, famine, and civil rights—speak to other societies in the past and present.

For students majoring in history, art and visual culture, music, English, comparative literature, communication arts, anthropology, or political science, a wide selection of courses in Irish Studies may provide a logical corollary to their principal interest while granting them expertise in one concentrated area. They will also be encouraged to pursue independent studies, and to take part in the program’s projects related to oral history and podcasting, musical ensemble playing, and community outreach. Students interested in an interdisciplinary major in Irish Studies (through Interdisciplinary and Special Studies) should consult with the director of Interdisciplinary and Special Studies and the director of Irish Studies.
