Students wishing to major in anthropology may choose between two tracks: general anthropology and Pre-Professional anthropology.  The general major requires 33 credits and provides a strong foundation in anthropology. The Pre-Professional major requires 39 credits and is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate studies in anthropology or a related discipline.  It requires two additional courses, including one additional 300-level course and a course in anthropological research design.  Under both major tracks, students may also elect to do a senior honors thesis.

The General Major in Anthropology provides the necessary preparation for a variety of careers, including education, international studies, medicine and allied professions, social work, corporate consulting, market research, museum work, academia, and many more.  Students may focus their coursework in one of the four sub-fields of anthropology (cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, or linguistic anthropology) or they may follow a more general track.  The general major requires 11 courses, totaling 33 credits.

The Pre-Professional Major in Anthropology is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate studies in Anthropology or a related field, but it also provides the necessary preparation for a variety of other careers.  As with the General Major, students may focus their coursework in one of the four sub fields of anthropology (cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, or linguistic anthropology) or they may follow a more general track.  To complete a Pre-Professional Major in Anthropology, 2 additional courses beyond the General Major are required, totaling 39 credits.

To explore the possibility of declaring a Major in Anthropology, stop by the department office in 314 Powdermaker Hall and request to meet with a Faculty Advisor.

If you have decided to declare a Major in Anthropology, send an email request to the Department Chair (Professor Larissa Swedell: LSwedell@qc.cuny.edu) and attach your completed major declaration form.
