The Department offers courses in accounting, auditing, data analytics, information systems, business law and taxation for accounting majors and other students. Accounting majors may prepare themselves for a career in public, private or governmental/not for profit accounting or for the teaching of accountancy in secondary schools There are two alternative tracks to the accounting major, depending on the career objectives of the student:
Accounting major- Advanced Accounting track. This track is targeted for students who seek careers in public accounting as well as senior controllership roles in industry and government/not for profit. This track meets the educational requirements to sit for the CPA exam in New York state. The track has a minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 for courses in this track and a total of 63 credits. Importantly, note that many states, including New York State, require individuals applying for CPA licensure to have completed an additional 30 credits of college coursework (total of 150 credits). For this additional 30 credit requirement, any college coursework above the 120 credit undergraduate degree for our Advanced Accounting curriculum is acceptable, as long as the 36 credit hours in business/economics have been met.
Accounting major- Business Accounting track. This track is targeted for students desiring careers in industry in financial accounting, managerial accounting, government and not for profit accounting and accounting operations. It does not meet the educational requirements to sit for the CPA exam in New York State. Students completing this track are not eligible for entry to the Queens College Master of Science in Accounting program. This program has a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 for courses in this track and a total of 40 credits.
