The course covers Ancient Egypt, Kush, Nubia, the West African Islamic kingdoms, and empires, East-Central and Southern Africa before 1870 (Swahili City States, Great Zimbabwe, and the Kongo Kingdom, …), the eastern slave trade and the transatlantic slave trade, the scramble for Africa and its partition at the 1884-1885 conference of Berlin.
