Course Title

Religion, Society, and Empire in the Middle East

Description

An overview of the development of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal Empires in the Islamic world during the period 1450-1700. The rise of these empires represented the end of the political fragmentation in the Islamic world that came about after the collapse of the Mongol system in the second half of the fourteenth century. Although these empires ruled over different geographical areas and different peoples, they responded to similar problems and were moved by similar motivations during the early modern period.
