Department(s)
Description
The first part of a two-semester sequence (Biology 34 and 35) that will introduce students to the scientific method for designing procedures for investigating natural phenomena, collecting data, acquiring new knowledge, and correcting and integrating existing knowledge. Students with no background in biology will participate in an authentic research experience-integrated into a laboratory course designed for freshmen-that will result in a significant contribution to the understanding of microbial genomics. During the fall course, soil samples will be collected in the field. From these samples students will identify and purifybacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria). The bacteriophages will be characterized structurally by electron microscopy, and their DNA will be purified and sequenced. This course has an M&T Fee. For more info visit: http://qc.cuny.edu/?id=JU9F
