The course will approach Shikibu's The Tale of Genji both as the seminal literary fiction of the Japanese tradition and as a predecessor to the modern psychological novel. The readings, in English translations, will include important texts by other 11th-century Japanese women writers, and selections from medieval critical commentaries.
