A study of comedy and satire in literature and culture. Topics may include the historical development of comedy and satire; theories of humor and laughter; and representations of race, gender, sexuality, and class. The course will examine a range of genres and forms, such as comedy of manners, farce, theatre of the absurd, vaudeville and minstrelsy, comedic/satirical fiction, comedic/satirical films, sitcoms, stand-up comedy, and sketch and improv comedy.
